Shipping Boom As Toyota In Thailand Exports More Cars

Toyota has three factories in the country and Honda Motor Co. and Nissan Motor Co. plan to spend a combined $850 million to boost capacity in Thailand. All of them use the country as an export base for other developing countries in contrast to China where they produce predominantly for the domestic market. That has Nippon Yusen, which counts Toyota as its biggest customer, adding ships and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Ltd. also predicting record volume for cars. “Thailand is a flourishing market for shipping lines,” said Ryota Himeno, an analyst at Barclays Securities Japan Ltd. “Its ports have been upgraded. It’s also close to emerging economies in Asia.”

Austal’s Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Unithai Shipyard and Engineering, Thailand’s premier shipyard, strengthens the companies’ cooperation and collaboration in sharing expertise and providing high-quality ship repair services to support defence and commercial vessels operating in the Asia-Pacific region. Based on the MOU, Unithai Shipyard will be Austal’s preferred repair shipyard for US-owned commercial and defence vessels, such as the LCSs and JHSVs that require repairs when operating near Thailand. “We recognise that Unithai Shipyard is one of largest integrated ship repair facilities in Thailand , with a world-class reputation based on its commitment to high standards covering health, safety and the environment, timely delivery, superior customer service and innovative solutions,” said Andrew Bellamy.
